New York's Freedom Tower Under ConstructionDecember 20th 2006 07:21
The BBC reports that the first foundation columns have been laid for the Freedom Tower that will replace the World Trade Center in New York.
The Freedom Tower is intended to be taller than Chicago's Sears Tower and become the tallest building in the United States at a height of 1,776 feet (541 m), a tribute to the year 1776, when the United States Declaration of Independence was drafted. Freedom Tower's program includes 2.6 million square feet of office space, as well as an observation deck, world-class restaurants, parking, and broadcast and antennae facilities. The estimated completion date is 2009. *This article is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation Licence. Americans are Getting Fatter, Taller & ThirstierDecember 18th 2006 07:04
The New York Times reports that the US Census Bureau has come up with some interesting ways in which Americans have been changing over the years.
Americans are still the fattest on the planet and are spending more of their lives than ever — about eight-and-a-half hours a day — watching television, using computers, listening to the radio, going to the movies or reading. The census data also shows that floor space in new houses is getting bigger and people are getting taller. Other interesting data is that Americans are now drinking more bottled water than beer, and they are more likely to be injured by a wheelchair than a lawnmower. Also in 1970, 33,000 men and 2,000 women earned professional degrees; in 2004, the numbers were 42,000 men and 41,000 women.

Would 137 Year Old Beer be Drinkable?December 12th 2006 07:09
The Age reports that beer brewed in 1867 has been discovered in Worthington's White Shield brewery in Burton-on-Trent. The surprising thing is beer experts say the 137 year old beer tastes "absolutely amazing".
Mark Dober who has tasted the beer said "It's amazing that beers this antique can still taste so delicious," he said. "Established wisdom would say beers this old should taste of vinegar, damp rags and Marmite. Instead, many show flavours of raisins and sultanas, baked apple and honey. The oldest — the 1869 Ratcliff Ale — is bright and luminous … and has a meaty character like smoked partridge with hints of molasses. It's amazing it tastes this good after 137 years
