Public Journalist - July 2008

Have you tried 5-Hour Energy? We've all heard that energy drinks can be harmful, but the 5-Hour Energy shots claim to be safe and healthy. My husband and I used them on our recent trip, so we could be more energetic while driving long hours each day.

According to the product website, "5-Hour Energy is packed with stuff that's good for you - B vitamins and amino acids." If you look at the product label, one serving provides 2000% of the daily value for bitamin B6, and 8333% of the daily value for vitamin B12. WOW! It must be really good for you, right.

Not neccessarily. Too much of a good thing can be bad for you.

Not enough B6 can cause numbness and/or tingling in hands and feet, as well as depression, mental disorders, insomnia, irritabilty, and kidney stones. Too much B6 can also cause numbness in hands and feet, as well as low blood sugar, mood swings, migraine headaches, hyper- or hypothyroid, muscle spasms, cramps, artritis, and higher or lower blood pressure.

Not enough B12 can cause numbness in hands and feet, shortness of breath, fatigue, weightloss, poor memory, and a host of other problems. Too much B12 can numbness or tingling on the right side, panic attacks, hyperthyroid, insomnia, and more.

As you can see, it is necessary to get enough of these vitamins, but too much is too much. It is just as risky to overdose on these vitamins as it is to be deficient in them.

In my experience, I only took 4 of these shots - on four different days within a week. Not realizing that there was any connection to the energy shots, I rushed to the doctor when I began experiencing numbness in my feet and legs. Even a week after the last drink, I still did not have all the feeling back in my feet and legs. Blood tests revealed that my levels of B vitamins were extrememly high. I assured the doctor that I don't even take a daily vitamin --- then I remembered --- in the week prior to onset of symptoms, I'd used 5-Hour Energy shots four times.

Don't trust advertisments or labels that claim "It's safe - it's healthy!" Remember - too much of a good thing can be just as bad as not enough!

Mployd.com is a rapidly growing international online employment opportunity site which has announced the launch of a unique local search capability in conjunction with Google Maps.

“This is great news for our employers that know they are only going to hire local employees. The team at Mployd.com has worked hard with our users to develop a unique job posting and job searching opportunity. No more searching a bunch of jobs to find a job down the street from where you live. Select your town and those are the jobs you will see when you visit Mployd.com,” explained Braiden Harvey C.E.O.

The new function on Mployd.com makes life much easier for job seekers. It not only allows a job search based on the desired location, it also provides driving directions to the interview. With the local job search and new Google Map functionality, Mployd is becoming one of the most desirable and easy to use employment web sites.

“We have developed a wide range of tools that allow job seekers to apply for jobs much easier than ever before, and at no cost,” said Harvey.

Job searchers also benefit from the job alert service. Job seekers register their chosen job category and then receive an automatic E-mail “Job Alert” with all the newly posted employment postings for their chosen category.

“Employers can receive a response to job listings minutes after posting because potential applicants receive a Job Alert as soon as it is posted. Applicants love being able to be the first to learn of a new position they can apply for,” explained Harvey.

Mployd is more than just a catchy name. Mployd has created a resource to meet the needs of companies, human resource managers, recruitment organizations, company recruiters and job seekers.

“Mployd is successful because we understand that to find great employees you have to implement innovative ways to recruit job seekers online,” said Harvey.

People do not have to wait for someone they care about to "hit bottom". Family and friends of an alcoholic or drug addict can play an active role in accelerating the process of "hitting rock bottom"--by allowing natural consequences to happen. Boulder author Joe Herzanek explores the concept of "raising the bottom" in his award-winning book “Why Don’t They JUST QUIT?”.

Boulder author Joe Herzanek explores the concept of "raising the bottom" in his award-winning book “Why Don’t They JUST QUIT?”. Herzanek explains, “This whole idea of “hitting bottom” is out of date. Some people will wait years—even decades—for their friend to reach this mythical point in their alcohol and drug use. But why wait for them to “hit bottom”? Why not help them by raising their bottom?”

Joe uses decades of successful experience counseling families, inmates in the Boulder County Jail, and with his own son, to explain how this works.

Herzanek—a recovering addict/alcoholic himself says, “My Mother Gladys, successfully used this idea with me thirty years ago, which led to twenty-nine days in treatment and a life of recovery. There are ways to encourage someone to reach for help much earlier and by doing so, we can avoid a lot of unnecessary pain and heartache—and maybe even save their life. For some people, hitting bottom will be six feet underground.”

Joe explains further, “Does everyone have to hit rock bottom? I would say no.Tough love can prevent a substance abuser from prolonging their usage. There are loving ways to refuse to rescue someone that in the long run will help him or her to choose recovery. Loving means doing the right thing to help. This can take all of our strength and energy at times. We all hate to see someone suffer—even when the suffering is a consequence of his or her bad choices.

This approach, or some form of it, is something you might consider; Raise the bottom. The next time this person you care about appeals to you to get them out of a bind (loan them money, pay their electric bill, buy them gas, pay for a lawyer), think twice. You just might be prolonging their disease and robbing them of the natural consequences that they need to experience in order to seek help and begin to connect the dots.”

NZ Police

July 14th 2008 08:37
You have to wonder at the police in New Zealand.

I’ve just been reading an article by Muriel Newman in which she points out that Nicky Hager, who was part and parcel of the downfall of the former Opposition Leader, Don Brash, has never been charged in any way with receiving stolen emails – emails that belonged to Mr Brash and which appear to have been hacked into by someone within Parliament itself
