Ambulance Stopped at Canadian Border
On Monday, U.S. Customs Officers stopped an ambulance at the border. The ambulance, with lights and sirens activated, was taking a Canadian patient to a Detroit hospital for an emergency angioplasty surgery.
The officers delayed the ambulance in order to check identifcation of the driver and patient, and required verbal confirmation from the patient. Luckily, the delay did not cost the patient his life, he is recovering in the Detroit hospital.
Policies and procedures have been established to prevent this kind of problem at borders, but they don't seem to be working. I'm all for national security, but give me a break. This ambulance had a police escort, arrangements were supposed to have been made to wave them through the border check, but they were stopped, putting this patient's life at risk.
