Flagstaff gears up for 22nd Annual Winterfest Celebration

Flagstaff, AZ (OPENPRESS) January 31, 2008 -- The 22nd Annual Flagstaff Winterfest, kicks off this weekend with a lively array of events and activities for the whole family. The Winterfest celebration last through the end of February. Here is a taste of things to come:
February 3
Cross Country Ski Race, Classic Style
Take part in a 10km classic style (diagonal-stride) ski race on gorgeous, groomed ski trails. The Flagstaff Nordic Center is located at the highest point on Highway 180 (mile marker 232) at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet. Pre-registration is required for the event. The cost is $35 per person and an all day trail pass is included. The race begins at 9:00 a.m. There is no cost to attend the event. February 9-10
Grand Canyon State Games at the Arizona Snowbowl
Arizona Snowbowl's 2,300-foot vertical drop and 33 trails of varied difficulty provide the ideal backdrop for this year's games, featuring giant slalom races and a skier and boarder cross for all ages. Register anytime between 7:30 - 9:00 a.m. at the Agassiz Lodge bar. Games begin at approximately 10:30 a.m. There is no cost to attend the event. Arizona Snowbowl is located off of Highway 180, north on Snowbowl Road, approximately 15 minutes from historic downtown. Eat, Drink & Ski Merry at the Flagstaff Nordic Center
Enjoy a delicious 3-course meal and wine while skiing and snowshoeing along 25 miles of scenic, groomed trails. The Flagstaff Nordic Center is located at the highest point on Highway 180 (mile marker 232) at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet. Pre-registration is required for the event. The cost is $60 per person, $105 per couple and includes an all day trail pass. Winterfest Star Fest at Lowell Observatory
This event will feature indoor programs and numerous telescopes set up for viewing throughout the Lowell campus. See Mars through the same telescope used by Percival Lowell in when he studied this fascinating planet nearly a century ago. Lowell Observatory is located at 1400 W. Mars Hill Rd., just minutes from historic downtown. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and there is no admission after 9:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $6 for adults and $3 for youth ages 5-17. Snowball Slide
This beloved tradition has been featured on NBC's Today Show and continues to be a favorite among locals as well as visitors. Thousands of plastic numbered "snowballs" are poured into a concrete mixer and spun around until they spill out and roll down Leroux St. It is a race to the finish as the speediest balls funnel into a narrow tube and the grand prize winner receives $2008. There are 20 additional prizes and proceeds benefit the Assistance League of Flagstaff, a volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to promoting goods and services to local adults and children. The fun begins at 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Leroux St. and Cherry Ave. in historic downtown. Enter for a chance to win, "snowballs" cost $10 for one, $25 for three, $50 for seven and $100 for fifteen. There is no purchase necessary to attend the event.
