Hillary Clinton on New Zealand
June 7th 2008 01:42
Paul Little, who produces a column called The Month That Was (misprint, mouth-offs and media curiosities) in the New Zealand magazine, North and South, posted this snippet amongst the other pieces of humour:
Distance Looks Away
Asked in a magazine interview to tell a joke, US presidential wannabe Hillary Clinton repeated a shopworn thing about how the only survivors of a nuclear holocaust would be 'the cockroaches and Helen Clark', who she described as a 'former' Prime Minister of New Zealand. Cockroaches everywhere reacted with dismay, Barack Obama said he thought Gandalf was our Prime Minister, and John McCain said he hadn't been to New Zealand since he was a witness at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. US voters, it turned out, were not terribly concerned about their candidates' familiarity with our political leaders.
For those who may not be au fait with New Zealand: Helen Clark is still our Prime Minister (though whether she will be after the next election at the end of the year is another matter); the Gandalf reference is to the fact that much of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed in New Zealand, and the Treaty of Waitangi was signed back in the middle of the 19th century.

Helen Clark, not looking too happy about the prospect of losing her position as Prime Minister at the end of the year.

So typical...
I never forget the US State Dept. referring to our PM Howard as Hawke, and another time confusing us with Austria...
Lets face it, both our countries are give the importance and deference of plankton.. all lost in the big blue sea...full of sharks!!

P.S. However, Kiwis did make the Yanks stand up and take notice all those years ago when they refused entry by the nuclear warships..BRAVO for that!!

The good thing, Anne, is that we don't have to rely on the US to be proud. Thank goodness! LOL
