Debut Novelist to Walk the Metaphorical High Wire

New York, NY (OPENPRESS) January 6, 2008 -- Carol MRP Co., publisher of Cooperative Village, has engaged director Ari Laura Kreith to stage a one-woman-show to be written and performed by the author. Ms. Kreith, who directed the sold-out 2007 NYC International Fringe hit “Double Vision,” will create a 50-minute show that can be performed in theaters, clubs, and conference settings.

“Though the literary readings as performed by Frances Madeson have been wild fun, we wanted to offer the audience of Cooperative Village another kind of spectacle,” explains Joseph de Dominicis, Founder and Publisher of Carol MRP Co.

"I have always been interested in storytelling that challenges or transforms the way we engage with our culture,” says Ms. Kreith. “What draws me to Frances Madeson's quirky, eponymous protagonist is that she is an idealist and fighter, struggling to do the best she can in a truly absurd situation. Cooperative Village is a gloriously funny satire of this crazy age we live in, and I'm looking forward to bringing Frances to life onstage."

“A million and one years ago I came to New York City with the hopes of working as an actress,” remembers Frances Madeson. “I was even in a Method Acting class with a teenaged Uma Thurman, then an Elite model. In her warm up, she’d roll down her spine and put her forehead on the floor. I quit the profession shortly thereafter. But now I’m back—with a comic novel, a comic monologue and another chance to grab the brass ring! Ain’t life grand?”

Playwright and novelist, Frances Madeson, holds degrees from Washington University in St. Louis and the Graduate School and University Center of City University of New York. Her plays—The Candle Lit, A Purim Tango, Shylock’s Heart and Levin’s Eulogy—have been produced or read at The Cleveland Public Theatre, the Jewish Repertory Theatre, Shakespeare & Company, and other venues. She has written three novels: Restaurant Week, Dancing for the Godfather of Soul and Cooperative Village. Published in May 2007, Cooperative Village is her debut book.

Director Ari Laura Kreith’s New York directing credits include Double Vision (2007 Fringe NYC and Fringe Encores Series,) Contracts (Lynx Ensemble Theatre, NYTheatre.com “Pick of the Week”), Memory Play—A Fragment (starring Eli Wallach--Women’s Project Lab), Trip (Provincetown Playhouse), Impostors (Neurofest), Dreamhouse (Midtown Int’l Theatre Fest), Lost and Profound (Working Artists Theatre), Three Sisters. Internationally, she directed the European premiere of Adam Guettel’s Myths and Hymns (Edinburgh International Fringe) and the solo show Fargo. Other credits include two national tours of The Giver, as well as regional productions and readings at Stamford Center for the Arts, Hudson Stage, Lycian Theatre, Henlopen Theatre Project, and many others. Ari served for seven years as founding artistic director of California’s Theatre Zoe, where she received three civic arts commission fellowships. Favorite productions with the theater are Grotesque Lovesongs, The Bug, Arts & Leisure, Eleemosynary, Trust, The American Plan, When We Dead Awaken. Ari is currently developing 2Gether/Noteplay, a series of commissioned short pieces inspired by a note found on the NYC subway. She holds degrees from Yale University and the University of California at Davis, and is a member of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab and the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers.
