Lovelorn Farmers

Five single people, three men and two women have become an overnight sensation in Wales because they put their faces on milk bottle containers in order to advertise their need for potential spouses. They did it on St Dwynwen’s Day – Wales’ equivalent of St Valentine’s Day.
The ‘Fancy a Farmer’ stickers also feature a website where interested parties can get in touch with them.
The stickers were pasted on by hand while the bottles were in the processing plant, a job that required the five to keep up with the pace.
The problem the five singles face is that more and more people are heading towards the towns and giving up on the farming life. This leaves people like Ian Jones and Elen Morris, two of the faces on the stickers, with a long life of loneliness. While both admit that the farming life isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and involves considerable work, they say they wouldn’t trade for the stresses and pressures of town life.
So far their campaign has resulted in letters and dating offers, while thousands of people have visited the website.
The idea came from a similar scheme in the States where the faces of missing children are often included on milk cartons. The farmers’ romance approach uses the same concept: most people drink milk, so most will notice advertising on milk cartons.
